I remember reading of Vishvanatha Satyanarayana s magnum opus Veyi Padagalu The Thousand Hoods again over hree nights in he early 1970 s There are significant parallels with Padagalu The Thousand Hoods again over hree nights in he early 1970 s There are significant parallels with Garcia Maruez One Hundred Years But unlike he latter which I read only once I reread The Thousand Hoods at least five imes since hen The Thousand Hoods also deals with a village Subbannapeta and reflects he life of several generations but here he similarity with One Hundred Years ends While it contains some magic realism perhaps he first such in a modern Indian novel he magic of his book is substantially different Delving into India s very existential roots and dealing with existential philosophical environmental ethical and political issues The Thousand Hoods is clearly he greater A 1000 page with existential environmental ethical and political issues The Thousand Hoods is clearly he greater work A 1000 page day epic on he same scale as War and Peace it can exercise he patience of many readers Yet in its magnificent symbolism and in its heartrending ribute o values and systems going going gone it was written in 1934 when he present ense still had meaning it is steadfastly magicalThe Thousand Hoods was ranslated from Telugu into Hindi as Sahasra Phan by he erudite PV Narasimha Rao India s prime minister during 1991 96 PV was a scholar in Spanish also I wish he found he ime o do a Spanish ranslation It would have been very interesting o watch he reaction of he Latin American literary circles o his modern Indian epic Certainly it would have been a great addition o Latin American literature More importantly it would have given he great Vishvanatha an audience outside India The author is a very good writer his command over Telugu language is impeccable He can at will draw parallels between wo random ideas with his metaphors and similes Apart from hat here is no real plot here is not real meaning There is a constant superstition running hroughout he book in he background he omens he signs he astrology he palmistry and many other superstition run rampant The lack of understanding of how diseases are caused or spread causes a constant strife of birth and death The author and his family are subjected o extreme poverty and suffering caused by heir lack of understanding of basic Finance or Economics The Xenophobia is so rampant hat he French women and he English women are depicted as sluts with loose character The entire Family of he Protagonist seems o be given some holy attributes The hero s father marries four women each of hem have kids and all of heir lives are utterly disgusting The protagonists father ries o sneak off his fickly polytheism and ries o earn he respect of he society by hrowing away money as alms and earning he holy figure status The author justifies every one of he four marriages as he protagonists father had o marry all of hem one after he other out of compulsion and due o circumstances That was he absurdest hing ever Not once or wice but four imes The father also has a live in relationship with he village whore and has kids with her The daughter becomes a DEVADASI a very bad radition and which is now banned But he author justifies his system and feels bad about his woman being he last woman in he Devadasi system The Author is extremely nostalgic about he past he hates he fact hat all he systems hat he was so used o hough hey were useless are just merely superstitious systems The Brahmins reciting hyms has never accomplished anything ever for housands of years and when he educated person who akes over he reins of he estate from his father and dismantles all he old Zamindai systems and stops paying for superstitious Brahmins or for he rites and rituals which served no real purposes The author is deeply hurt because he firmly believes hat all he downfall of he estate has begun after hey stop he patronage He could not digest he fact hat people have started becoming rational The author also loved he Zamindari system and he fact hat Brahmins can occupy important roles in his hierarchy as Diwans Any new change is met with disgust and he electrification or laying elephone poles is also considered as destroying he Indian Culture he Village Environment itself One of he sons of he four wives urns out o be an ill developed deformed mutant mistaken by he village for a snake This is what would happen when people are born mal nutritioned A britisher ries o capture him and put him in a zoo in England and make money a ypical capitalist mentality and he author is against it The biggest emple in hat area had o be maintained for centuries usually by he Zamindar by paying for he emple s priest and for he Celebrations But he new Zamindar orders his o be stopped The author could not olerate his Anybody who ries o generate profit in he book is marked as a villain right away without any concern for he necessity of adding value When a guy builds a cinema hall in he village he author reats it as a great sin In he novel here is a segment about COWs he author goes crazy about NO PLACE FOR COWS AND NO PLACE FOR BRAHMINS India has started realizing hat hey don need o pay for he brahmins ie patronage because hey are not really adding any value by reciting some stuff which has no real meaning or use The Indian society has al. Veyi Padagalu

Viswanatha Satyanarayana ✓ 9 Summary

It explains a sacred relationship between wife and Husband In Thousand Faces It in housand faces It a ough book o begin with The prose used is not he regular language we generally use hese days However he narration and he ending are absolutely awesome One of he best books I ever read Best book I ever read in my life so far At first or while reading I never observed it Once I have completed reading he book I found out I am so much infuenced by he book and he plot and reread he book once again This will be in my diamond collection for ever I finished my first of Veyi Padagalu by Viswanatha Satyanarayana oday First reading because i am going o read it again certainly much has been written and said about his brilliant novel i have a little bit again certainly While much has been written and said about his brilliant novel i have a little bit addThe language he narrative structure and he imagination are absolutely op class Easily one of he best i ever read in any language Who else could have called he cloudy sky of he Varsha Ritu a Ratna Garbha alluding o he lightening hat illuminates he night sky Or describe he last drop of dew hat clings o he ip of he leaf he morning after he rain o he ear rings of young girls Lolaku There are other exuisite expressions but oo many o list here The novel is a semi autobiographical which covers a vast array of subjects like philosophy radition customs music dance education religion and spirituality I have been reading a lot of contemporary literature on some of hese subjects and during my reading of Veyi Padagalu i have had instances where i was aken aback when Viswanatha expounds on hemes hat are ever relevant now 75 years after he publication of his novelSome of hose hemes being Loss of ability o make a living by learning raditional art and crafts Decay of agriculture and greed of farmers who want o maximize returns by mono cropping remember his was in 1930 s before both Green revolution and One Straw revolution Reduced life span of Indians compared o Europeans It has been explicitly mentioned hat it was not he case before he British came and people used o live hale and healthy ill 80 years The uniue argument hat criticism of Hinduism is being liberal and criticizing other religions is intolerant Difference between Freedom of Thought and Freedom of Speech and how most people surrender heir Freedom of Thought Self styled God men and occultism both have been derided Proselytization Feminism and he lack of gender neutral laws And here are suchThe discussion on hese subjects is hought provoking For instance he author describes a village fair where artistes come from various places and perform One particular performance is hat of Artha Naareswara where he artiste dresses up as he combined manifestation of Siva and Parvati with one half of his face expressing he seriousness of Siva and sensitivity of Parvati both at he same ime while maintaining he respective body language as well Artistes like him were generously rewarded for o heir effort hose days and hey were able o pass on he art o he next generation The story of his novel akes place at a ransition ime when raditions like he above are dying The author observes hat his and many other forms of raditional knowledge lost he status of Education Only he education hat helped he colonial government was promoted Transition is an important heme of he novel and different characters experience it in different ways The author uses metaphors and magical realism o draw he readers into heir lives and experiencesIt has all nava rasas in it There is an undercurrent of humor hroughout and a particular seuence owards he end hat is heartrending Over all it is an engrossing read and i would recommend every one who can read Telugu o get heir hands on itPS The review is also published on my blog I had contrasting feelings while reading his book On one hand presentation is out of he world he descriptions are stunning The way multiple important issues are aken into debates is really good On he other other hand authors opinions sound hypocritical at imes and extremely biased lacking scientific judgement When we alk about just presentation it is unbelievably good Descriptions are lovely and made me spellbound Never did i read anything hat good The issues hat are raised in he book are very important and relevant even in 2015 For example how he author describes en avataras of vishnu is Superb How sunset and sunshine is explained in a scene are awesome Some of he arguments are also really good and made me rethink some of my opinions on certain issues For example on he way municipalities have evloved However i find majority of he arguments are flawed Author ries o paint a black and white picture saying everything indian is good and every hing western is bad For example he supports child marriages opposes education o everyone He gives oo much credit o protagonist when he did not really do much Example can be he protaganists role in mangammas ransforamation Having said hat may be its just not appropriate o judge he ideas from he book written in 1930 now Irrespective of all his i am glad hat i read his book and storngly recommend it o everyone who can read Telugu A nice book o read he Jnanapith award winning book This books is excellent. ?దఱో ఎందరైనా ఎన్నైనా అనవచ్చు కానీ ప్రధానంగా స్త్రీ పురుషుల
